History of Stiles

George Stiles was a part of the heating and air conditioning industry since his graduation from Southern tech in Atlanta, GA in 1954. His career wound its way from a service technician with Lennox Industries and then a small family-owned company (D & R Heating and Air Conditioning, Tucker, GA), to territory manager for the Carrier distributor in Georgia, to ownership of his own heating and air conditioning companies in Athens, GA and Anderson, SC.

In 1974 he purchased Climate Engineering in Athens GA. This company was predominantly a commercial/industrial heating and air conditioning company. In 1983, Stiles Heating and Cooling, was opened in Athens as his residential & service Company.

In 1979, he began thinking about starting or purchasing a company in another location. Through the South Carolina distributor for Carrier, he learned of the availability of D & M Services, Inc. in Anderson, SC. It was a well-established residential/light commercial company, and it has now added large commercial work to its’ capabilities.

In 1999, the decision was made to expand the Georgia operations into Winder and Greensboro.

With the turn of the century, the decision was made to change the names of all the companies to Stiles Heating and Cooling – letting the communities where we reside know what we do and who was doing it.

George & his wife Carolyn were the parents of four children – one daughter and three sons and the grandparents of sixteen – eleven grandsons and five granddaughters and the great-grandparents of one great-granddaughter.

George passed away in June of 2008 leaving the running of the business in the hands of his four children. Mark, Doug & Garrick Stiles all work in the Athens office and Susan Walker works in the Anderson, SC location.
